Try this next time you need to write something: Imagine one or two people who would read your document.
Imagine what they look like – maybe download a photo to help you visualise. Give them names; perhaps Bob or Sue.
Think through what is going on for them and how they may react to your message – will they receive it willingly or could there be a bit of resistance? Are other things going on that may distract their attention?
When you write, write directly to Bob or Sue. Speak as though they are in front of you. You may even speak the words as you type. An exercise like this will help you write more personally and directly.
Remember, you are always writing to real people.
